Nickerson Beach/JBWR Photo-Tour August 15-17, 2012; Only 2 slots left!

Nickerson Beach/JBWR Photo-Tour August 15-17, 2012: $999. Co-leader: Denise Ippolito. Introductory slide program: Tuesday August 14 at 7pm. Limit 8/Openings: 2.

I love Nickerson Beach in August. There are lots of fledged chicks around, and lots of adults feeding young. Lots of predation. And lots of birds flying around, many with fish. And mid-August on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (JBWR) is the very best time of year as the handsome young shorebirds in juvenile plumage are just arriving. A fresh juvenile Least Sandpiper is guaranteed to knock your socks off.

Join Denise and me for three days of learning and fun. There will be an introductory slide program at 7 pm on Tuesday August 14. Instruction thereafter will be in the field, in the bagel store, and in the motel lobby. Informal image sharing and Photoshop sessions will be held in the latter two locations depending on the weather and the length of our shooting sessions.

You can see a wonderful collection of Denise’s Nickerson Beach images here.

There will–weather permitting–be two photography sessions each day of the photo-tour. I will be in NY for several days before the trip and will be scouting the East Pond at JBWR. If conditions there are good-excellent, we will visit the East Pond on one or two mornings. If conditions are poor we will not visit JBWR at all. There is simply no way to know in advance due to the unpredictability of the water levels, unexpected heavy rains, and the vagaries of shorebird migration. As always we will be getting up early and staying out late. Breakfast is bring your own/motel lobby. Lunch is always on me.

With sunrise just after 6am and sunset just before 8pm we will be taking a nice midday break so that we can be in the field for the sweetest light. If it is cloudy we will stay out longer in the mornings and head to the beach earlier in the afternoons. We will be visiting Nickerson Beach every late afternoon. If we opt to head out to the beach at Nickerson before the gates re-open at 5 or 6pm each vehicle will need to come up with the $30 entrance fee. Car-pooling reduces the impact of this fee.

For best results at JBWR you may want to get down on the ground but sitting behind your lowered tripod is an excellent option. In either case we will be getting wet and muddy at JBWR and sandy and possibly wet at Nickerson. There are often big rain pools for the skimmers to practice their skimming; walking in the water is often a big advantage. Recommended gear: a tripod-mounted telephoto lens of 500mm or more with teleconverters and a hand held flight lens. We have some Canon long glass available for rent on this Photo-Tour. Please e-mail for details or with a specific request.

Unless you are an immediate local you will want to stay with the group at the Best Western Mill River Manor, 173 Sunrise Highway, Rockville Centre, NY, 11570‎.(516) 678-1300.

Happy campers only please :). Before committing please read our deposit and cancellation policies here. To register call Jim or Jennifer at 863-692-0906 with your credit card in hand to leave your $200 non-refundable deposit. If no answer please leave a message and we will get back to you. On weekends or evening before 9:30pm eastern time please call me at 863-692-2806. Upon paying your deposit you will be asked to fill out the forms here and return them with your check. Payment in full via check is due immediately. Please make your check out to “Arthur Morris” and send it to us by regular mail/US Post Office to Arthur Morris/BIRDS AS ART, PO Box 7245, Indian Lake Estates, FL 33855.

I have no idea if this trip will sell out in two days or if we will go with only one or two folks. Note: All BAA trips run with a single registrant unless stated otherwise in advance for specialty trips. But I do know that both Denise and I will do our best to provide you with a quality educational experience filled with great photographic opportunities. To see a just a very few of the things that you will learn on this Photo-Tour, see the caption below each image.
