Canon EF 600mm f/4 L IS lens with 1.4X II TC and Canon EOS 10D  digital camera.  ISO 400.  Evaluative metering - 2/3 stops: 1 /1000 sec. at f/11.

It just love the 10D's AF accuracy, especially with birds flying directly at the camera.

 BON VOYAGE

I fly tomorrow morning at oh-dark hundred to Portland, OR for the tenth annual NANPA Summit where I will be doing two breakout sessions:  Digital Discoveries in Bird Photography.  If you are attending, be sure to stop by the BIRDS AS ART booth and say "Hi."  Next Tuesday I fly to Chicago, spend a day with Todd Gustafson, and then fly to Tanzania for our sold out (12) photo-safari!    I will be out of the office until February 15 and regret that I will be unable to respond to your e-mail questions in my usual fashion until my return in mid-February.

I could photograph these guys in breeding plumage every day for a month without ever getting bored!

We will have Delkin BP 511 batteries in stock this week.  These are the rechargeable batteries for the 10D digital camera and are recharged with the Canon-supplied charger that came with your camera.  We are able to offer these at the amazingly low introductory price of $29.99 each plus $3.00 shipping and handling per order.   Florida residents need to add 6% sales tax to the cost of the batteries only.  Send a check or use the Paypal links at www.birdsasart.com/delkin.htm.

Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS lens with Canon EOS 1Ds digital camera.  ISO 400.  Evaluative metering +1/3: 1 /4000 sec. at f/4.

The long trip to Bolsa was well worth it!  The EF 300mm f/4L IS lens is a deadly tool when used with any of my three Canon digital bodies.

THE SAN DIEGO IPT

Like the post X-mas IPT, this trip too was a huge success and all participants went home happy and smarter.  With eight repeat participants on the trip, it was great seeing so many old friends and students again.   LaJolla was great on the first morning and the beach that afternoon was fabulous too.  We bit the bullet on Day two, leaving the 7 Seas Motel at 4:30 to make the trip all the way up to Bolsa Chica.  (I had visited two days before and it was incredible.)  We had a spectacular morning with still water and fog and ethereal light on the White Pelicans so nobody complained about the long drive and the long day...

The Wood Ducks cooperated on day three, as did the Lesser Scaups in the afternoon.  It was totally overcast, actually socked in as we worked the ducks, yet when we got to the beach to do some flight shooting the wind had come up and the skies amazingly had turned blue.  We were truly blessed!  And Linda Harris and Suzie Wrenn earned their merit badges for gull feeding and bread tossing.

Canon EF 500mm f/4 L IS lens with 2XII TC and Canon EOS 1Ds digital camera.  ISO 250.  Evaluative metering -1 stop: 1 /250 sec. at f/11.

I knew that I would need lots of underexposure to avoid blowing out the white on the bill.
The Shadow/Highlight Adjustment in Photoshop CS is an amazing tool for handling images that had to be severely underexposed...

Canon EF 500mm f/4 L IS lens with 1.4X II TC and Canon EOS 1Ds  digital camera.  ISO 250.
Evaluative metering +1 stop set manually: 1 /60 sec. at f/5.6.
Fill flash at - 1 one stop with Better Beamer.

It was a magical morning at Bolsa...  Here I used the classic +1 exposure compensation to keep whites white in low light or cloudy conditions...

Best and great picture making to all,

Artie
