BIRDS AS ART ON-LINE Note: March 20, 2003

Royal Tern, breeding plumage. Fort DeSoto Park, last Saturday morning...

EOS 1Ds, Canon 500mm f/4 L IS lens, 2X II TC

ISO 200, Evaluative metering -1/3 stop: 1/1000 at f/13

The birds at DeSoto are well acclimated to humans.  Approaching this beautiful individual with the 500 on a ground pod was a snap.

Nature Photography Weekend

Sponsored by Johnson Photo Imaging and Canon USA

Sarasota, Florida March 22-25, 2003

The Art Of Nature Photography; It Ain’t Just Birds!

     Two-Day How-To Seminar:  SAT/SUN March 22-23, 2003
Fort DeSoto Park In-The-Field Workshops: MON March 24 and TUES March 25

The two-day seminar is for all nature photographers (not just bird photographers) who want to learn how to make better images. Artie will describe the methods and techniques that he has developed and used since 1983. His comments on equipment (including digital), film, autofocus, light, exposure, composition and picture design, image sharpness, getting close to wild subjects, and his tips on photographing action and behavior will benefit everyone with a telephoto lens who wishes to dramatically improve the quality of their images.

The cost of the Two-Day Seminar is $100.00 at the door (walk-ins welcome), $90 in advance.  You can sign up for the SAT/SUN Seminar only by calling JPI  (941 752 0550) or by visiting the store on SR 70 E, about 1 mile West of I-75 at 6709 State Road 70 East, Bradenton FL 34203.  Coming from the north use Exit 217, from the south use Exit 217B. The phone number is 941-752-0550.  The Seminars will be held at Mote Marine.  Registration begins at 8:30 am on Saturday.  Call JPI for directions.

The In-The-Field Workshop(s) will be held at Fort DeSoto Park. They are open to all; you do not need to register for the SAT/SUN Seminar to attend (but lord only knows why you would want to miss it...) Limit: 10 participants.   A 400 mm lens with a 1.4X teleconverter is the minimum recommended focal length lens for these Workshops.  500 and 600mm telephoto lenses are ideal.  (Pre-dawn to sunset with a two-hour break after lunch.)

LIMITS: 10.  MONDAY: OPENINGS: 7, TUESDAY: OPENINGS: 9 (Practically private instruction!)

The cost of the In-The-Field Workshops are $200.00/day. Probable subjects include Laughing Gulls and Royal Terns in full breeding plumage performing various courtship displays, hundreds of shorebirds including Marbled Godwit, and various herons and egrets including both the dark and white phases of Reddish Egret in spectacular breeding plumage with their bright pink bills and ultramarine blue lores.
